“For "IS" and "IS-NOT" though with Rule and Line,
And, "UP-AND-DOWN" without, I could define,
I yet in all I only cared to know,
Was never deep in anything but—Wine.”
Reflection · Summer
The Is and Is-Not, the Up and Down — these are the formal divisions of philosophy and mathematics, the axioms that Khayyam could deploy with more precision than any scholar of his age. He defined them brilliantly, in treatises read across the known world. And yet — yet, the small word that turns everything. In all he cared to know, he was never deep in anything but wine.
Not the mathematics, not the astronomy, not the theology. Wine. Not a confession of failure but a statement of priority: the things that can be defined with rule and line were less interesting to him than the thing that can only be experienced. In summer this verse is almost a manifesto. Deepness — the real depth, the kind that goes all the way through — this he found only in wine.
